Students on Stage

Students from grades 4 to grade 12 who are keen about acting may audition for STC's Students on Stage program in September 2012. Students on Stage is a special program where students learn all about producing a play while rehearsing this season’s production.

The show will be staged Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 2 and 7pm.

Call the STC Box Office at 705.674.8381 x21 for more information.

Our Students on Stage instructors are Amber Hicks (Director) and Bill Sanders (Producer).

Amber has been a mainstay of Sudbury theatre for over 20 years. Her performing credits include lead roles in The Taming of the Shrew, Crimes of the Heart, The Lion in Winter, Dangerous Liaisons and Jitters. Directing credits include You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and over 100 murder mysteries.

Bill, who was formally part of STC's technical staff, is a multi-talented set designer, actor, director and musician. STC acting credits include Babes in Arms and Arsenic and Old Lace, and he directed Run for Your Wife. He currently teaches acting for film at Thorneloe University. In addition to television commercials, he has appeared in the short films Love is Blind and Turn it Up.

SoS FAQs

Will every child who auditions get a part? Unfortunately, we are only able to take as many students as are required for this production.

Will there be added rehearsals other than the ones on the schedule? If we lose days because of inclement weather or other similar circumstances, extra rehearsals are added. Closer to the actual production date, some students may be asked if they can give extra time - depending on the role. If it is not on the original calendar, extra rehearsals depend entirely on the student’s availability.

How many adults will be working with my child? Our coaching team consists of up to eight adults.

Are students permitted to bring snacks to rehearsal? Yes, however, we ask that they don’t bring anything messy or that contains peanuts. They should also bring a thermos or bottled water.

What clothing is required for rehearsals? Comfortable clothing is recommended so that the student can work on the floor if necessary. BLACK jazz or ballet shoes are required. Please put the student’s name in the shoes. Note: hair is to be off the face (boys and girls) for rehearsals.

Am I able to watch rehearsals and classes? We kindly ask parents not to attend rehearsals or to come backstage at show time because it’s a distraction. Each student has a binder to hold their script and they are given notes which will inform you about the course and other details. This binder must be brought to every rehearsal.

Are parents involved in the show in any way? Parents are invited to help on props and costume days which are apart from the regular rehearsal days. Extra seamstresses/props builders are always appreciated - a contact number for wardrobe and props will be available once rehearsals begin.

What do I do if my child has a class trip or is on a school sports team? As in most activities, it’s all about choices. The commitment to this course is unconditional. The student actors must realize that they are an integral part of the production no matter what size their role is and cannot miss, arrive late or leave a rehearsal early. In the event of illness, please call STC at 674 7788 x23 and leave us a detailed message.

Do I have to buy a costume for my child? The students, the costume team and parent-volunteers make the costumes. For the play, boys are often asked to provide their own black socks, a long sleeved black t-shirt, and black shorts to go under the costumes. (Students will be changing in and out of costumes in the wings so the black shorts are mandatory.) Girls are often asked to provide their own black opaque (thicker) tights with feet in them and a black long sleeved leotard (body-suit) OR a long sleeved black t-shirt and black shorts (to go under the costumes.) Do not buy any of these items until Wardrobe has completed the list of costumes required for this particular production.

What do I do if school is cancelled on a Monday? If school is cancelled, so is rehearsal. We have a telephone pyramid set up for other emergencies. Your child will be told who will be calling him/her.
