Playwrights' Junction Evening of Readings

Wow, the Playwrights’ Junction Evening of Readings Monday night did not disappoint! From the dramatic to the comic and the surprising, the readings were all excellent.
Under the leadership of Matthew Heiti, STC's Writer-in-Residence, the group of ten have been meeting weekly to share and develop their work. And the results were outstanding. Could you write a story about a hotel room with a personality? I mean a literal personality? How about the thick dramatic silent moments when a husband returns home after years of absence from his wife and child? A happily married older woman passing on advice to a newlywed with a secret? The give and take between two military men trapped in a forgotten missile silo filled with nuclear explosives? These were only a few of the provocative and varied excerpts.
Local actors performed to flesh out the work of the playwrights, lending voices to the characters. For example, Sudbury’s poet laureate Roger Nash participated, reading as a thickly- accented man speaking about the Toronto subway and the joys of coming home to his wife at the end of the day. The founding members of Encore Theatre, a new theatre company based in Sudbury, also performed, bringing the evening’s plays to life. Two thumbs up to all.
The Sudbury Theatre Centre hopes to continue the momentum into next year. Keep your eyes peeled early next fall for a call for submissions for yet another Playwrights’ Junction.
